Longtime
LPWS activist Tom Isenberg has lost his Tuesday night talk show at
Seattle's KVI-AM. The station had covered the weeknight 7-9 PM stint
with different hosts each evening. Now the station has hired a fulltime
host for the slot.
The February
issue of the LP News carried a thoughtful commentary on sexual
harrassment law by Kirkland attorney and occasional WL contributor Jeff Jared, who argues that
common law contract and tort law provide adequate remedies for bonafide
harrassment, and that recent legislation on the subject hobbles ordinary
social relationships and free speech.
Washington
Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders, who identifies himself as a
libertarian, recently faced a hearing before the Commission on
Judicial Conduct for attending a pro-life rally in January, 1996.
Critics claim Sanders' appearance and 1-minute speech violates
''appearance of fairness'' rules. Sanders was represented at the hearing
by the Washington ACLU, which announced that although it
disagreed with the views of those sponsoring the rally, it would defend
the Justice's right of free speech. A decision by the Commission is
expected in about 30 days.
On January
17th, LP Deputy Director of Communications George Getz debated Robert
Weiner, spokesman for drug czar General Barry McCaffrey, on KHJJ
radio in Lancaster, California. When Weiner was hammered for trying to
deny that Americans were being arrested for mere possession of
marijuana, the DEA spokesman decided he'd had enough. After a couple of
hostile questions from Getz and callers, Weiner ''turned tail and
quit the interview early, leaving just 15 minutes into a scheduled
30-minute debate,'' Getz says.
''George,'' remarked the host, ''I
got the feeling that the drug czar's spokesman was lying to us.''
