The Libertarian Party of Washington State
The Libertarian Party of Washington State

Washington Libertarian - Volume 1, Number 1

It was the very first edition, and did not even have a name yet.

It was hammered into a ''purple horror'' mimeo master, using a manual typewriter. Errors were difficult to correct, so there were many of them.

This is scanned from an original press run edition, obtained from "Skip" Barron -- who founded the Libertarian party of Washington State on September 13, 1972.

The petitions reported here are for the first Libertarian presidential ticket, John Hospers and Tonie Nathan, who qualified for the Washington state ballot two weeks after the party's founding.

Washington was one of only two states to qualify Hospers/Nathan for ballot status. The other was Colorado, where the party was founded.

Washington state went on to deliver the most votes for the ticket -- 1,537 -- versus 1,111 for Colorado -- out of 3,907 nationwide. Tonie Nathan (v.p.) became the first woman to ever receive an Electoral vote (cast by 'dissident' Elector Roger McBride, the 1976 LP presidential candidate).
